오랜 만에 특강을 하기로 해서, 준비하고 있는데 쉽지 않다. 이번 강의 내용이 다음주 말까지 마감해야 하는 원고의 바탕이기도 해서 더 그렇다. 강의를 듣는 사람은 대학생이고 원고가 실릴 잡지를 읽는 사람은 대학생부터 좀 배웠고 이론 좀 읽었다는 사람들이다. 물론 트랜스젠더 이슈를 강의한다는 건 독자가 누구건 상관없다. 다들 비슷한 배경을 가지고 있으니까. 그래서 나의 욕심과 독자/청자의 기대 사이에서 수위를 조율하는 건 늘 쉽지 않다. 10년의 내공이 쌓인 것도 아니고, 매우 어설픈 지식에 어정쩡한 체계를 갖춘 나로서는 더 어렵다. 말하고 쓰는 나도, 듣고 읽는 이들도 모두 난감한 상황일 때도 많다. 물론 모든 빼어난 강사들도 이런 과정을 거쳤겠지? 그들도 어설펐던 시절이 있었을 거라고 믿으며 위로하지만, 정작 그 자리에 있었던 청중들은 어쩌란 말이냐! 흑흑.

몇 주 전, 한 선생님과 얘기를 나누다가 한국어로 쓴 논문 중에서, 섹스 혹은 생물학적 성이란 것이 사회문화적으로 구성되었음을 설명하는 논문이 매우 적다는 얘길 듣고 놀랐다. 두꺼운 책이 있긴 하고(『섹스의 역사』, 책은 두껍지만 서론만 읽어도 충분하다;;;) 여성학 교제라고 불리는 책들마다 간단하게 언급하고 있긴 하다. 하지만 생물학적인 성, 의료기술을 통해 구성되는 몸과 젠더의 관계를 집중해서 다루는 논문은 별로 없다고 한다. 아니, 더 정확하게는 충분히 쉬우면서도 사람들에게 권할 만한 논문이 없다고 한다. 의학의 사회문화사를 다룬 괜찮은 책은 젠더나 섹슈얼리티란 범주를 간과하는 식이다.
사실 이번에 쓰고 있는 글의 주제가 대충 이런 거다. 근데 잘 쓸 수 있을지 모르겠다. 의학-기술-몸-젠더란 주제어는 내가 매우 좋아하는 주제다. 그래서 관련 글을 읽을 때마다 깨달음의 황홀을 느낀다. 흐흐. 하지만 이를 글로 쓰는 건 전혀 다른 문제. 흑.

추석이라 부산에 갔다 왔다. 엄마 님과 얘기를 나누다 재밌는 순간이 있었다. 엄마 님은 언제나 내가 의사가 되길 바랐다. 이유는 간단하다. 엄마 님이 워낙 아픈 곳이 많다보니 의사 자식 덕을 보고 싶었던 것. 하지만 난 이과에선 수학을 전공했고, 실험보다는 인문학 서적을 좋아하는 인간이다. 아이러니는 여기서 발생했다. 위에서도 적었듯, 내가 관심을 가지고 읽고 있는 책 중엔 의학사상사나 의학 발달과 관련 있는 책들이 여럿 있다. 의사는 안 되었지만, 의학이 몸을 통제하고 해석하는 방식을 공부하는 사람이 될 것 같긴 하다. 크크크.
아이러니는 하나 더. 부모님은 내가 공무원이라는 안정된 직종에 취직하길 바랐다. 평생 돈문제로 고생했으니 충분히 가질 수 있는 바람이다. 하지만 나는 프리터처럼 평생 비정규직으로, 불안정한 직종에서 살기를 바란다. 근데 또 내가 흥미롭게 읽는 주제 중 하나는 국가가 국민/시민을 관리, 통제하는 방식이다. 뭐, 이런 식이다.

루인님은 스스로의 인생을 개척한 경우고, 저는 어른들 바램대로 따라가는 경우네요 ^^;
워낙 어렸을 때 부터 들어왔던 말들이라 어디까지가 그분들 생각이고 어디서부터 제 생각인지도 불분명한데,
이것도 뭐, 나쁘지는 않다고 생각해요.
하지만 루인님처럼 자신의 의지대로 사는 사람들을 부러워하게 되는건 어쩔 수 없지 않나 싶어요.
아마도 평생 아쉽긴 하겠지만, 제 인생도 나름대로 부러움을 사는 인생이지 않을까 생각하며 살래요 ㅎㅎ
